Animated GIF Viewer for Windows 7 and Vista

In contrast to Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista doesn’t support viewing of animated GIF files. However, you can use the standard Windows Photo Viewer to open GIFs, but it will only show an image that is still because it’s an animated file. You can also choose to set Internet Explorer as the default viewer to view animated gifs, but many aren’t keen on using it since it is slow to open and it isn’t able to see multiple gif images at once which are within that same directory.

Luckily, Seven Forums member named ‘corgano’ developed a tiny but handy application that lets you quickly browse non-animated as well as Animated GIF files in Windows 7 and Vista. Gifview offers an extremely simple user interface and doesn’t require any installation. It can also browse multiple gifs in rows which means that you can move between files by using The Previous or Next buttons or simply use the keys to go back and forward to change between gif files. It also has a unique characteristic that allows you stop an animated gif. end an animation GIF in order that you can take the exact frame.

To make use of GIF Animation, just right-click any GIF file and then open Properties. Under Properties, select Change. In the ‘Open with’ window search for gifview.exe directory and choose the default program for opening with. Then click OK and then OK.
